Hey Oscar Wilde! It’s Clobberin’ Time!

It’s a common practice among contemporary comics artists to do commissioned sketches or even fully realized drawings for fans and collectors. Often collectors will commission drawings by a number of artists on a single theme, and create over time a collection of themed works by an extensive and diverse list of creators. Such is the case with the collection displayed on a site titled Hey Oscar Wilde! It’s Clobberin’ Time! , by a collector whose name I don’t know (email address suggests “sgettis”, presumably S. Gettis). The collection is centered on the theme of asking each artist to portray a favorite literary figure, author or character. This collection has been in progress since 1998, and has been displayed on the web…

Animation Art Collecting #1 – Authenticating Artwork
An animation art gallery recently received a call from a collector who wanted to sell three drawings of Pluto from the 1937 short film, Hawaiian Holiday. The gallery was interested, so they asked the collector to hold the drawings up to the light and check to see if there was a watermark on the paper. Watermarks, invisible to the reader unless the...

From Impressionism to Modernism: The Chester Dale Collection
American art collector Chester Dale, who had a passion for late 19th and early 20th Century Avant Garde painting (a phrase that, of course, refers to different artists at different times) left a bequest to the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC that includes 85 works from French and American artists. The museum has mounted an exhibition...

Televolution
Televolution
Televolution is an animated short by Malcolm McNeil , who I have written about previously here and here . Originally shown in Japan in 1990, when some of the the tech he suggests was almost prophetic, the animation is meant to salute the birthday of Charles Darwin (an event that just passed again recently). McNeill traces the course of evolution...
Rome After Raphael
Rome After Raphael
Old master drawings are a challenge for conservators. Fragile and damaged over time simply by exposure to light, drawings cannot be placed on permanent display, or even frequent display. Every period of exposure to light must be considered, in effect, a time subtracted from the life of the drawing. Also, drawings, even those by great masters,...

Vintage German Illustration
Susan Lenox has posted a collection of vintage German posters, illustration and advertising art (mostly late 19th and early 20th Century) to a Flickr set . There are travel posters, ads for beer, bicycles, theatre and pens, and a variety of artists and styles. Many of the images are linked to larger versions, but unfortunately not much larger....
Velázquez (Self?) Portrait Rediscovered
Velázquez (Self?) Portrait Rediscovered
It may be disconcerting to some, but I actually enjoy the fact that art history, like history in general, is a fluid landscape. New discoveries and the reinterpretation of existing information can make textbooks obsolete overnight and reverse the fortunes of collectors and museums; and can also lead to excitement, disappointment or simply clarification...
