Norwegian painter and engraver Frits Thaulow long ago became one of my favorite artists on the basis of a single painting in the collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Water Mill . I make a point of visiting it every time I’m at the museum. This stunningly beautiful and dramatically large painting embodies Thaulow’s wonderful touch with the portrayal of small bodies of water. He captures again and again the mercurial effects of light as it dances over, under and through the rippled surfaces of small streams, canals, mill races and rivers. Thaulow is often classed as a “Norwegian Impressionist”, and it’s interesting to compare his paintings to works by Sisley and Caillebotte ; but like most painters outside the circle …

Impressionism – Painting Light is the title of an exhibition at The Albertina in Vienna, Austria, on view through 14 February, 2010. The exhibit draws from the collections of the Wallraf-Richartz Museum and Foundation in Cologne, as well as the Albertina and the Batliner Collection, with additions from private collections and other museums....
Since I last wrote about painter Karen Hollingsworth in 2006, she has continued exploring her luminous room interiors, which have evolved into “windowscapes”. Many painters will work to fill rooms with light, but Hollingsworth’s rooms are volumetrically filled with the palpable presence of light and air. Sea air lifts gossamer...
I’ve been flirting with one of the new effects in After Effects CS4, ‘Cartoon’. If you would like to produce the exaggerated features of caricature, the overstatement of emphasized features, this tool makes it easy. You can see French impressionist painting with exaggerated color, broader boundaries and soft touches on all the elements.

Here is a wonderful step by step plein air painting demo by the very talented artist, Cyndra Bradford. Cyndra will demonstrate how she creates a beautiful impressionist style painting of two horses in a farm setting. To master plein air painting takes lots of time and practice. It is definitely a very challenging form of painting as you must work...
When I first noticed Atlanta based artist Karin Jurick, it was from her early participation in the “ painting a day ” discipline back in early 2006, a then still-young practice among perhaps a dozen or so serious painter/bloggers. I then wrote a dedicated article about her work , noting my admiration for her direct, painterly approach,...
As you begin to develop light transmission and shadows your next ‘best friend’ will be the multiple views available in After Effects. One of the first applications for light and shadow is a sweeping arc, like we see in stadiums or blasting the sky on nights of celebration. To see the sweep of continuity of your arc, to see the distance...
I’ve profiled Boston based painter Jeffrey Hayes before (also here and here ). After being an early adopter of the painting a day regimen, Hayes realized that his inclinations required more time, even when painting on an intimate scale. Today he follows that direction, painting small, carefully composed and rendered still life paintings,...
Oregon painter Mitch Baird paints the landscape of the Pacific Northwest, both dramatic and more intimate, with a fresh palette, confident brushwork and clear vision. He also applies his skills and passion for plein air painting to scenes from travels in Europe; and paints lively still life compositions and occasional figurative works. Baird received...
When is a painting not a painting? Mixed media artist Alexa Meade presents that question in images that look like somewhat painterly expressionist/realist paintings but are in reality painted objects, including people. For her living paintings series Meade applies acrylic paint to the surfaces of objects and walls in way that mimics the appearance...
A question from a reader prompted me to revisit my 2006 post on Marie-Denise Villers , a talented but little known French portrait painter whose “one-hit-wonder” claim to fame was that her painting, now called Young Woman Drawing (detail, above), was for some time attributed to Neo-classical master Jaques-Louis David (also here )....
