Frits Thaulow (update)
Norwegian painter and engraver Frits Thaulow long ago became one of my favorite artists on the basis of a single painting in the collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Water Mill . I make a point of visiting it every time I’m at the museum. This stunningly beautiful and dramatically large painting embodies Thaulow’s wonderful touch with the portrayal of small bodies of water. He captures again and again the mercurial effects of light as it dances over, under and through the rippled surfaces of small streams, canals, mill races and rivers. Thaulow is often classed as a “Norwegian Impressionist”, and it’s interesting to compare his paintings to works by Sisley and Caillebotte ; but like most painters outside the circle …

On this "Artsy" Mission, Jolene takes you to the Corcoran Gallery Of Art in Washington DC. www.Corcoran.org The DC Arts Commission hosts Art Salons every month, and the Corcoran was hosting a Salon this past October. Jolene received a special invitation from the DC Arts Commission to film the event! http While she was there, she interviewed Artist Brandon Hill, which you'll remember from a past Jolene Goes Artsy. Brandon was there exhibiting his artwork, including some pieces he had to create with other artists. The group artwork had to match the style of the current Exhibitions at the Corcoran Art Gallery, which were Seargant and the Sea, and Edward Burtynsky. These great Salons get together Art minded folks from the VA, MD and DC Area! The President of the Corcoran Art Gallery and Art School spoke, including many people from the DC Commission. These were on loud speaker, and in a big hall. The audio didn't turn out all that great, so it's not included, but it was so great to see all these people! I show you some of the good the techniques I use when I paint the painting. Speaking through a language consisting only of lines and colors, Abstract Art can be a translation, expression, or a representation of something rather than a portrait of it. Some individuals compare it to that of a child's school project. Defined, Abstract Art uses a visual language of form, color, and line to create a composition. It may exist with a degree of independence from visual references in the world. Throughout history there were 3 art movements that contributed to the evolution of this timeless art: Romanticism originated in the second half of the 18th century in Western Europe where it increased in its popularity during the industrial revolution. It can be described as a revolt to aristocratic social and political norms during times of Western philosophy and cultural life: the Age of Enlightenment Expressionism artists explored new techniques such as intense colors, drawing distortions, and bold use of paint surface. This would create incredibly emotionally charged works that came from reaction and emotion rather than a subject. Lines and colors...Here I use a little photoshop trick to color the lines of the ink: blocking the transparent pixels of the layer with the ink (only works if there is no background color!). I also changed the clothes color and ended up with something gay...Blargh!
Eyfells Sculpture Creation Expressi...Johann Eyfells has hundreds of these sculptures all over his ten acre yard. They are quite a sight. I noticed them from driving by and had to turn in and explore these forms. Fortunately Johann Eyfells himself was there and he invited us to view all of this, even taking us into his home which was filled with more of his wife's paintings.
