Mak the Horny Mac-Daddy by Ian Miller
I saw Ian Miller’s one-minute short last year at the Ottawa International Animation Festival, when I was a member of the festival’s three-person short film jury. We gave it an honorable mention for the undergraduate animation category (it was created at UArts in Philly). Looking at it again, I remain impressed by the insane amount of graphic inventiveness that Ian fits into every frame of his animation. The action line has been of primary importance to all cat drawings, be it in portraits of the figure in action or in the frame-by-frame rendition for film. What might appear as meaningless doodlings of sweeping lines at the beginning of a composition will soon end as an exquisite composition of details held together by one single action line.

Chris at Keyframer.com has glimmer of hope… As most of us know, Adobe introduced Bones (inverse kinematics) to Flash CS4. What most of us may not know is that the IK span (created when using the Bones tool) supports the control of graphic symbols containing nested animations. Why would you not know that? Because there seems to be a legit...

Anime stories traditionally expose and question the lines of progress, commerce, loyalty, honor and culture all within the graphic nature of animation. Anime style is beautiful to watch. It has a sense of poetry, it has a rhythm. Anime is not afraid to be art. You don’t even need to have the speakers on to appreciate the story, the motion and...
