I saw Ian Miller’s one-minute short last year at the Ottawa International Animation Festival, when I was a member of the festival’s three-person short film jury. We gave it an honorable mention for the undergraduate animation category (it was created at UArts in Philly). Looking at it again, I remain impressed by the insane amount of graphic inventiveness that Ian fits into every frame of his animation. There is nothing cliche about the way anything moves in this film. The ideas flow straight out of Ian’s twisted mind onto

Short film spotlight: Lucky
Lucky is the collaboration between Melbourne based All India Radio and animation company Dee Pee Studios . It involves a painstaking animation technique, whereby the team paints in the air with glow sticks, frame after to frame to create entire sequences of animation, sometimes taking a whole night to shoot.  Read More →
Heart of Refuge by Piotr Kamler
Polish animator Piotr Kamler (b. 1936) won the Grand Pix at Annecy in 1975 for his film Le Pas , but I’ve chosen to display an earlier film of his called Heart of Refuge ( Couer de Secours , 1973). The breathtaking visual imagery in this 1973 film is nothing short of mind-blowing, and it is cited by Amélie director Jean-Pierre Jeunet as the...
Illustrating the Cat in Action
The action line has been of primary importance to all cat drawings, be it in portraits of the figure in action or in the frame-by-frame rendition for film. What might appear as meaningless doodlings of sweeping lines at the beginning of a composition will soon end as an exquisite composition of details held together by one single action line.  Read More →
“Je Pars” by Stéphanie Cabdevila
I like the simple but direct graphic concept that Stéphanie Cabdevila employs in this video for Mary’s Dream. She produced it at Paris-based Metronomic . If it’s not already clear from this video and the front page of her website, Cabdevila’s work has a playfully twisted visual sensibility. It’s also on display in this video...

Day and Night clip
Here’s a 15 second clip from Teddy Newton’s Pixar short Day and Night which will be released with Toy Story 3 on June 18th. The short is essentially hand drawn, being Pixar’s second film to be animated in 2D animation ( Your Friend the Rat was the first). The insides of the characters are CG. Man, this looks good. Natural Animation by David Montgomery
Florida-based filmmaker David Montgomery creates animated films entirely out of objects found in nature. The imagery found within these pieces, like Pollenating II above, is nothing short of mesmerizing. His latest piece, Carapace and Shell , a series of animated loops of seashells found on the beaches of Northeast Florida, will be screened at the...

CBTV Student Fest #4: Artichoke Hearts by Kazimir Iskander
Artichoke Hearts may be one of the most unique selections in our Student Film festival. It was finished this year by Kazimir Iskander at Minneapolis College of Art and Design. The film’s polished, upbeat look, which wouldn’t look out of place on a prime-time TV animated series, draws the viewer in, but the content is anything but standard...

Winds of Change
You may have noticed that there’s been a lull in the amount of writing I’ve done lately. This was caused by a rather intense period of personal development which I’m eager to share with my readers. Keep in mind I’m still in the process of learning, so I’m not going to act like I know what I’m doing, but I would...
