The video above is about The Future , a twelve-minute animated short drawn and voiced entirely by artists who are members of League Treatment Center’s L.A.N.D. (League Artists Natural Design) Gallery in Brooklyn. What makes these artists unique is that they all have developmental disabilities. The film is being directed by NY animation artist M. Wartella ( Wonder Showzen, Superjail ) and is scheduled for completion

Q&A by the Rauch Brothers
Q&A is an affectionate little short that debuted last year but was posted online just yesterday. It’s directed by the Brooklyn-based Rauch Brothers , which is headed by brothers Mike and Tim (who animated the film single-handedly): Joshua Littman, a 12-year-old boy with Asperger’s syndrome, interviews his mother, Sarah. Animated Histories of Poland and the Soviet Union
What follows are two very different approaches for using animation to teach history. Both films successfully condense long periods of time and information into digestible length. While neither of these animated projects should be viewed as substitutes for actual historical study, they go a long way toward making history appear exciting and accessible....
Wow! A Talking Fish! (1983)
This is seven minutes long, but I promise you it’s well-worth watching. It’s an animated film from Armenia, in Russian with sub-titles, written, produced, animated and directed by Robert Saakyants. It’s based on an Armenian folk tale, and at about 1:30 a wizard appears — the animation of this shape-shifter makes this a classic....

Avatar, The Animated Film That Wasn’t
I was thinking today, If Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel has enough animation in it to be eligible for Best Animated Oscar, and A Christmas Carol is considered animation, then Avatar most definitely qualifies as an animated film too. The only reason Avatar isn’t on the list of animation Oscar contenders is because the studio didn’t...
Sassypants & Sweetieface: Animated Dreams
If you’ve ever made an animated film, you’ll be able to relate to Sassypants & Sweetieface: Animated Dreams by Phylicia Fuentes . Goofy drawings, creative movement, and funny voices—the type of fun animation that I love to see. It was made at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts. (Thanks, Fran Krause )  Read More →
CBTV Student Fest #4: Artichoke Hearts by Kazimir Iskander
Artichoke Hearts may be one of the most unique selections in our Student Film festival. It was finished this year by Kazimir Iskander at Minneapolis College of Art and Design. The film’s polished, upbeat look, which wouldn’t look out of place on a prime-time TV animated series, draws the viewer in, but the content is anything but standard...
Animation Block Party 2010 Winners
The seventh annual Animation Block Party wrapped up in Brooklyn last Sunday. The event’s organizer, Casey Safron, has created a unique and worthwhile event. When I attended on opening night (my first time at Animation Block), there was an enthusiastic crowd of over one thousand people who had gathered on the lawn of the Automotive High School...
