The video above is about The Future , a twelve-minute animated short drawn and voiced entirely by artists who are members of League Treatment Center’s L.A.N.D. (League Artists Natural Design) Gallery in Brooklyn. What makes these artists unique is that they all have developmental disabilities. The film is being directed by NY animation artist M. Wartella ( Wonder Showzen, Superjail ) and is scheduled for completion

Wow! A Talking Fish! (1983)
This is seven minutes long, but I promise you it’s well-worth watching. It’s an animated film from Armenia, in Russian with sub-titles, written, produced, animated and directed by Robert Saakyants. It’s based on an Armenian folk tale, and at about 1:30 a wizard appears — the animation of this shape-shifter makes this a classic....

Avatar, The Animated Film That Wasn’t
I was thinking today, If Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel has enough animation in it to be eligible for Best Animated Oscar, and A Christmas Carol is considered animation, then Avatar most definitely qualifies as an animated film too. The only reason Avatar isn’t on the list of animation Oscar contenders is because the studio didn’t...

Jonathan Demme To Make An Animated Feature
The book cover illustration above by Rachell Sumpter is responsible for one of the more intriguing animated feature announcements I’ve heard in a while. Director/producer Jonathan Demme has optioned the rights to the Dave Eggers novel Zeitoun, and inspired by its cover, he’s decided to make it as an animated film. Demme told The New...
Animated Review of Avatar
Nobody’s come forward to claim responsibility for this elaborate animated review of Avatar . I particularly like how they (I’m assuming more than one person made it) used the same performance capture animation technique as the film itself. Stats on YouTube show that the video is popular in New Zealand, but word on the street is that it’s...

Stop-Mo Explosion: Jackboots on Whitehall and Project Chopin
Hot of the heels of the recent spate stop-motion features – Fantastic Mr. Fox, Coraline, Mary and Max, $9.99 and A Town Called Panic – comes word of production of even more! A new UK feature called Jackboots on Whitehall is an epic World War Two satire, animated with what look like “Ken” dolls. Ewan McGregor, Tom Wilkinson...

In early 2010 The Academy Of Motion Picture Arts And Sciences will again award one animated film the best picture of the year. The category has only existed since 2001 and is awarded only if there are at least eight animated feature films released in that year.  Read More →
Caspar David Friedrich – Nature Animated
Caspar David Friedrich – Nature Animated
Since I wrote my post about the great 19th Century German landscape artist Caspar David Friedrich back in 2006, many additional resources for viewing his work have appeared on the web; and there is a new exhibition of his work, Caspar David Friedrich — Nature Animated along with a complimentary exhibit, Friedrich, Eight Contemporary Commentaries...
The Apple and the Worm
Animator David Nethery pointed me toward this intriguing 2D animated feature coming from Denmark, The Apple & the Worm , directed by Anders Morgenthaler ( Princess ). It was apparently made totally paperless, drawn on Wacom Cintiq tablets, using TVP Animation software. If any of our bilingual readers can translate the trailer’s introductory...
