Old master drawings are a challenge for conservators. Fragile and damaged over time simply by exposure to light, drawings cannot be placed on permanent display, or even frequent display. Every period of exposure to light must be considered, in effect, a time subtracted from the life of the drawing. Also, drawings, even those by great masters, receive less notice and attention than paintings, and for both reasons are less frequently the subject of mounted exhibitions. So when collections or parts of collections of master drawings are exhibited, it’s worthy of notice. The Morgan Library and Museum in New York, which I have written about previously , and mentioned in my recent post on their cuerrent exhibit, The Hours of Catherine of Cleves , is home to a great collection of master drawings. They have drawn form it, if you’…

Sandra Allen draws highly detailed and carefully rendered images of individual trees. Her charcoal and pencil drawings are large scale, often 6 feet (3 meters) in height or more. As I’ve mentioned before (also here ) the attribution of works to artists from the past is often an inexact science, perhaps more of an art in itself. Attributions change, and works once identified with one artist are subsequently assigned to another, or often, to pupils of the artist. Sometimes the reverse happens, and works once assigned...
David Levine was one of the great caricaturists of the 20th Century. He is best known for his drawings of notable figures published in The New York Review of Books over course of more than 40 years. The NYRB web site has a gallery of over 2,500 of his drawings that can be browsed by year or category. Unlike caricaturists whose subjects are largely...
An animation art gallery recently received a call from a collector who wanted to sell three drawings of Pluto from the 1937 short film, Hawaiian Holiday. The gallery was interested, so they asked the collector to hold the drawings up to the light and check to see if there was a watermark on the paper. Watermarks, invisible to the reader unless the...
It may be disconcerting to some, but I actually enjoy the fact that art history, like history in general, is a fluid landscape. New discoveries and the reinterpretation of existing information can make textbooks obsolete overnight and reverse the fortunes of collectors and museums; and can also lead to excitement, disappointment or simply clarification...
This 1970 German documentary on Robert Crumb contains rare footage of Ralph Bakshi in his studio during the making of Fritz the Cat. Young Ralph is shown in the studio, walking through New York and looking at one of his animators flip through drawings. The documentary was loaded onto YouTube in three parts (embeded below) and is NSFW (not safe for...
Animator Ward Kimball’s famed Chloe locomotive was on the move recently to Yorba Linda, CA for the annual Holiday Festival of Trains at the Nixon Library . The steam engine, along with a model representation of Kimball’s whimsical Grizzly Flats Railroad, is on display through this Sunday, January 10, 2010. Featured are two huge layouts of...
One of the problems confronting small museums, that are most often originally based on the art collection of an individual at their inception, is the question acquiring and maintaining a physical space in which to display the works. Maintaining a physical space is often more difficult for small museums than large ones. Even though large museums...
A new museum of animation, cartoon and comic art has opened in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It’s called ToonSeum and it just had its grand opening last weekend. Reportedly it’s not a huge space, but is nicely done. Their first exhibit focuses on animation art: “Enchanted Drawings: A Century of Animation.” The exhibit will...
