Extn. 21 by Lizzie Oxby
In 2007, you’ll recall Madame Tutli Putli ’s disturbing and effective use of live action eyes composited onto the animated puppets. A few years earlier, British filmmaker Lizzie Oxby combined stop-motion animation, live action performance (placing a live action head on a stop-mo puppet) and digital effects for her film Extn. 21 . The...
Animation As a Form of Media
Animation can be used to inform, educate, advertise and express emotions just as live action can by using the same techniques; such as the use of colour, film language and sound. The NSPCC advert by Russell Brooke on television is a good example of how animation can be more effective than live action. There is no limit to how much a situation or an...
Modeling & Texturing
Regardless of what kind of animation you are planning, the first thing you must do is create the objects you plan to use in your animation. In keeping with the live action metaphor, objects can be thought of anything that is in front of the camera, this includes actors, props, and scenery.  Read More →

History of Animation in Live Action
Animation in live action means integrating real life characters with animated characters. It started way back in 1940 during the black & White era where Disney movies had not even taken shape. ‘Gertie the Dinosaur’ was a first movie made where live action & animation were used in collaboration. This was the silent film era. Disney...

Wild Wind by Leo Campasso
Twenty-one-year old Leo Campasso , an animator at Buenos Aires studio HookUp Animation, created Wild Wind in his spare time. The short is an experiment that combines pixel-style characters with traditional cartoon animation principles. The results are a lot of fun and prove that one need not associate pixel animation with stilted, boring movement...

Animation Tuesdays
It’s official. I’m hosting a regular series of cartoon screenings, the first Tuesday of each month, at the CineFamily/Silent Movie Theatre on Fairfax Avenue. My screenings will be different each month. Sometimes I’ll show classic cartoon shorts in 35mm, or maybe I’ll screen a rarely seen animated feature, or possibly do...
AOS and The Bathroom by Yoji Kuri
Whereas the age of a live-action film, no matter how classic, can always be discerned by the appearance of its actors, the cinematography, and the style of acting and direction, great animation has the capacity to be timeless. Take Yoji Kuri’s short AOS . It was made 46 years ago, yet the visuals feel as raw and disturbing today as when it...
