Gul by Adnan Hussain

March 29th, 2010 admin

Adnan Hussain ’s short film Gul ( Flower ) draws the viewer in with its striking impressionistic CG imagery, but keeps the viewer engaged with its storytelling, which carries a clear and powerful message even as it verges on obliqueness. A Quicktime version of the film can be found on Adnan’s website . I asked Adnan via email if he could share some details about the production of Gul . Here is what he wrote: I’m a Los Angeles-based Pakistani-American artist working primarily in animation and live action vfx. Gul (Flower) , an interpretive piece meant for the viewer to connect their own experiences, is my first short film. It is the culmination of personal art and skills learned as a technical director at Walt Disney Feature Animation, Sony Pictures …

“Your Love Is My Drug” Inserts by Lizzi Akana
Lizzi Akana created these Peter Max-ish inserts for the Ke$ha music video “Your Love Is My Drug.” Here’s a Quicktime link to the entire piece , directed by Honey, that shows how the animation fits into the primarily live-action video. I asked Lizzi if she could share details about the production and this is what she said: I would...
Titles for Henchin’
Here’s a nice little animated opening title sequence from Henchin’ , an otherwise live action short film by Javier Badillo. Badillo, an animator / filmmaker from Venezuela living and working in Vancouver, wrote and storyboarded the sequence, and then put together a team of animation artists, including animation director Jeff Agala (Atomic...
Animation As a Form of Media
Animation can be used to inform, educate, advertise and express emotions just as live action can by using the same techniques; such as the use of colour, film language and sound. The NSPCC advert by Russell Brooke on television is a good example of how animation can be more effective than live action. There is no limit to how much a situation or an...
Extn. 21 by Lizzie Oxby
In 2007, you’ll recall Madame Tutli Putli ’s disturbing and effective use of live action eyes composited onto the animated puppets. A few years earlier, British filmmaker Lizzie Oxby combined stop-motion animation, live action performance (placing a live action head on a stop-mo puppet) and digital effects for her film Extn. 21 . The...
Toy Story’s 3D process
Toy Story’s 3D process
The New York Times has an excellent article that describes the process that Toy Story and Toy Story 2 underwent at Pixar Animation Studios for their 3D re-release: The production process for a 3-D movie requires the use of two cameras, positioned next to each other, shooting action at the same time to mimic each of the viewer’s eyes. A live-action...
History of Animation in Live Action
Animation in live action means integrating real life characters with animated characters. It started way back in 1940 during the black & White era where Disney movies had not even taken shape. ‘Gertie the Dinosaur’ was a first movie made where live action & animation were used in collaboration. This was the silent film era. Disney...
AOS and The Bathroom by Yoji Kuri
Whereas the age of a live-action film, no matter how classic, can always be discerned by the appearance of its actors, the cinematography, and the style of acting and direction, great animation has the capacity to be timeless. Take Yoji Kuri’s short AOS . It was made 46 years ago, yet the visuals feel as raw and disturbing today as when it...
Red Dead Redemption Machinima Short Film Review
Machinima has been a favorite form of online entertainment for years, but rarely does anyone from Hollywood notice or even get behind the wheel and make some of their own. That changed when Rockstar Games decided to make a short film to promote their newest release “Red Dead Redemption”. Instead of creating a live action short, they decided...

Fox should just switch to Animation
Fox should just switch to Animation
Why is it a no-brainer (literally) for major studios to green-light live action CGI remakes of classic cartoon properties as feature films (Scooby Doo, Marmaduke, Yogi Bear, The Flintstones, Underdog, Garfield, Speed Racer, etc.), but the idea of reviving such characters as TV series is considered a no-no? One major reason movie execs chase these...
